Why I haven’t posted + redefining my language/life goals

You may have noticed that I haven’t posted anything in a while. Not on my blog. Nor on my channel.

I know that I’ve promised to post some videos but I’ve never done that.

You’ll probably be thinking that I’ve been busy with building my own business and that it’s logical that I haven’t posted anything.

However, I noticed that every day I become more and more unproductive.

And everything that I’ve been doing didn’t turn out the way I wanted.

I’m glad that everyone has been nice to me and encouraged me to continue.

However, I’m also happy with the critical comments that help me learn what I can improve.

Due to some personal factors, I lost my structure, motivation, and social environment. My body was screaming to stop. I was distracted easily and had a hard time focusing on my tasks. Also, I often felt too tired to do something.

I decided to listen to my body and took a break from everything for approximately 1.5 months now.

What I discovered during my break

There are three things that I tried to push myself through at the same time. These three things are great challenges that are far too big for me to overcome at once. These include:

  1. Starting my own business
  2. Public speaking
  3. Expressing myself in English

I started Polyglot’s Diary in August 2016 to improve my English. My level was too basic and I was barely able to hold a conversation. In January 2018 I quit my job to start a business and create content in English.

I noticed that I underestimated how big these things are to me. I’m not good yet and I don’t want to start something mediocre or deliver low-quality content because of my lack of skills. Also, it’s extremely hard for me to get my tasks done quickly. Even writing a simple blog post like this one takes up a lot of time.

I won’t focus on the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year

At the beginning of this year, I wrote that I wanted to be able to speak 10 languages and create some courses.

However, now, I think it’s very important to me to work on my body and health to bring my life back to a balance. Also, I need to educate myself and improve my speaking skills so that I can get more things done.

Redefining my new goals for this year

So looking back at everything that I haven’t achieved this year, I set the following goals for myself:

1. Reaching level C2 in English

I know, many people tell me that my writing in English is good but I’m not satisfied with good. Good won’t pay your bills. I want to become better. I want to produce high-quality content and even write books someday. I want to be professional and have fewer difficulties in expressing my ideas in English. I believe that reaching level C2 will help me with that.

Currently, my level is C1 and I’ll find a teacher through Italki or another platform to reach this goal.

2. Finishing all the business-related books that I have on my shelve

I love reading and the last couple of months, I spent too less time doing this. I’m a huge fan of consuming content that helps me improve my life. Here’s a list of books that I want to finish before the end of this year:

  • The lean startup
  • Competitive Strategy
  • Zero to One
  • Tribe of mentors
  • Thinking, fast and slow,
  • Freakonomics,
  • Startup evolution curve

3. Reading more books on topics that I want to focus on in English

I believe that one of the things that will help me express my ideas better in English is reading and listening to the way others formulate their ideas and thoughts on some subjects. I’ll need to find some books. Suggestions are welcome.

4. Improving my public speaking skills

I want to shoot videos easily and give better presentations in the future. I’ve always dreamed of inspiring a lot of people so I definitely need to work on the way I express myself.

I’m going to follow the course, “Become a motivational speaker” on Udemy and read the book, “Talk like TED”.

5. Reaching level C1 in Spanish

I have a lovely teacher on Espaker and I really want to express myself like native speakers. It would be awesome if I could speak Spanish like the way I speak English right now.

6. Reaching level B1 in Portuguese

Ever since I started learning Portuguese, I met many amazing Brazilian YouTubers and other people who were extremely nice to me. I feel so attracted to the culture that I believe that even if I’ll be so extremely busy with everything I’m working on, I will definitely make some time to improve my Portuguese.

What about your channel “From Zero to Entrepreneur”?

Somewhere in February, I announced my second YouTube Channel called, “From Zero to Entrepreneur” because I wanted to share my entrepreneurial journey. I still want to do that but I won’t continue on that channel. I’ll probably make one documentary to share my journey.

What about your channel “Kamila Tekin”?

I will edit the videos I still need to edit for my channel and then take a break. Making videos sucks up extremely much time and energy right at this moment in my life. Once I’ve improved my skills, I’ll continue posting

What about your blog??

I’ll work on my English but at the same time continue sharing my resources and tips. I’ll mainly post guest posts. If you want to contribute, go to this page: Write a Guest post

And Social media?

I’ll stay active on social media. Follow me in case you haven’t yet @kamilatekin on both Twitter and Instagram.

The most important thing I’ve learned

I’m excited about all of this and try to be very honest with all of you. That’s why I wrote this post. Of course, I’ll continue sharing my language learning progress and journey and I believe that my challenge with these factors will give it an interesting twist.

Sometimes life is strange and our body shows some resistance. The best way to deal it is to listen to your self and learn to set smaller steps. We can be so obsessed with our ideas that we want to hurry and hurt ourselves sometimes but that’s completely unnecessary.

In the end, there’s no need to rush. You can achieve anything you want.

You need to learn to start at the right moment.

Remember to work on the best version of yourself. Every day.

Kamila is a polyglot who taught herself over 5 languages using social media and apps. She created Polyglot’s Diary where she enjoys sharing her tips and experiences. Head over to her Instagram profile and YouTube Channel to follow her progress.
